You’ve debuted your new haircut and the reviews are in: on trend. Now let’s talk about keeping it that way until your next scheduled salon visit. Winter in Melbourne might be a good excuse for an occasional hat day, but let’s make those good hair days an everyday event.
Even though your hairstylist has given you good advice from the salon chair, it’s easy to fall back into old habits when no one is looking. Follow these guidelinesto care for your hair the way we do.
Hands off
Try to avoid constantly touching your hair. Every time you run your hands through your hair, it takes away the natural oils that keep your hair healthy. It also adds tiny bits of debris and other oils, no matter how clean you think your hands are.
Be gentle
When you towel dry your hair, don’t be rough. The friction of hard rubbing isn’t good for hair. Let it air dry for a little while and then smoothly glide the towel over it. Or loosely wrap the towel around your head and softly squeeze it.
Don’t go wild with the hair-dryer
If you blow-dry your hair, keep the hair-dryer at least 15cm away from your head and blow briskly in strokes from the top down. Blow-drying in an upwards motion can cause more damage. Leave it slightly damp.
Know your own texture
Fine hair can dry out more quickly with blow-drying, so keep the temperature on a low setting. Thicker hair can withstand a little more heat, but never too much. Very curly hair may require detangling first.
Condition and treat
Your hairstylist will have recommended the products that are right for your hair type. Don’t forget to condition after your haircut or it may become dull or frizzy after a few shampoos.
Don’t overdo it
Shampoo cleans our hair, but it also strips away the oils, leaving the hair dried out. Washing with shampoo every few days should be enough. Use conditioner on its own in between or simply water-rinse. People with very oily hair who use shampoo daily could try every second day instead.
With these tips in mind, you’ll be able to keep your hair in salon-perfect condition in-between visits. For more advice, feel free to get in contact with professional hair stylists anytime!
